The Soviet Union was so Gay

I can't remember where I downloaded this Soviet propaganda poster but I've been meaning to share it for a long time. I believe it portrays a Red Army soldier being greeted with homoerotic joy by a 'liberated' Polish peasant during WW2 (beginning or end? Unclear). With the detail of the two forefront characters I can't help but wonder who modeled for the artist in that era.. or whether there's some sort of subversive or ironic message here. (Like the Brezhnev-Honecker kiss on the Berlin Wall.)

I'm guessing the peasant is another Russian. Until recently, it was a common custom for Russian men to kiss each other on the lips as a sign of familiarity and endearment.

However, I'm pretty sure the Brezhnev-Honecker kiss was meant to be mocking.

(It might also be worth noting that the after the drafting of the Soviet consitution in 1926, all laws banning homosexuality were abolished.)

Reminds me of one of the few remaining soviet statues in Prague, in the park near the station IIRC? Love the Soviet era art although this not one of my favourite images.

I stumbled across this post looking for soviet time posters. It's a pretty old post, and no one probably cares but the writing says, "Our army is the army that frees the workers." J. Stalin

The homoerotic joy comment cracked me up... Cheers.

Actually it's not gay as long as it doesn't have a homosexual motive.
It was pretty okay to kiss a man on the lips to express joy or excitement. You can see that quite a number of times in the old Soviet movies.
Too bad the custom has died out due to people who call any sharing of emotions with the same gender gay...

Hey, noobs that think this is "gay", without the soviets in WWII, we may have lost! These soviets died for freedom...and you sicos are calling them gay? thats just sad...its not gay. if kissing another man was gay, than all americans would be gay, all italians would be gay, the french would be gay. no. its not gay. i hate noobs that think kissing someone is gay. its a sign of peace, love, happiness, and sometime just saying hello!!!

alcaponeman, get outta here fag. I know what poofs like you think and I dont like it. You are straight-phobic so get a shrink. Go to Russia where your queerness will be properly celebrated. Speaking of the hate you expressed. That's another hallmark of queers, they are full of hate and violence that is cured only by bullets of the proper caliber. You two-faced queers express hate and violence in the same sentence you express love and happiness. Hello Hypocrite!

The soviet union wasn't good. Stalin was a tyrant and some of the soldiers raped women. And they only joined the allies' side in ww2 after germany started attacking them.

the allies SIDE!? really?! because if you look anywhere, it says that the soviets made the biggest contribution to the war, the battle of stalingrad was the most important turning point, and by the way, stalin mightve been awful to his people, but when he died, i can assure you that the whole country wept. He was an amazing leader that led russia through one of the toughest times. he won the war. and america... oh america.... all you did was "test out" your atomic bombs on the Japanese. you had no idea what the effect would be, and that it killed over 1 million people. they really didnt do anything special. and germany wouldve surrendered to the soviets even if D-Day didnt happen.

and regarding the picture and the retarded comment, this is what people do to say hello, or congratulations. women did it too. russia isnt the country that has 150,000 gay marriages a year.
